Nate Shuzo dates back to1866 in Kuroe City, Wakayama prefecture, in an area along the coast of the Kii peninsula, bordering Nara prefecture in the Kansai region.
The brand name, which means Black Cow, is derived from a scenic spot named Kuroushigata, a famous cow shaped rock which once stood on the beach near the brewery but has since been destroyed by an earthquake. This rock was famously referenced in the Manyoushu, an anthology of ancient Japanese poems. The area is also historically famous for its lacquerware craftsmen.
